Starting on Thursday, 17 September 2009, our books are on sale at 30% off our already deeply discounted sticker prices. If you ever found yourself thinking our prices were too high, break out your old calculator and drop by one more time. We don’t know when this sale will end.

Riding off into the sunset

As much as it pains us to tell you, The Thieving Magpie Bookstore is getting ready to close its doors forever.

The harsh reality is that we could just never get enough people to cross our doorsill no matter what we did. And, without people coming in, there just weren’t enough books going out the door. We don’t want to blame everything on the economic downturn, because we know that we made a lot of mistakes ourselves.

We’ve had lots of great publicity and the generosity and enthusiasm of our customers and neighbors has been more than we deserve. We think we had a good plan and translated it into a pretty darn good bookstore. That’s all we ever wanted to do.

If you’d like to come by one last time, please do. We are still operating normally for a while, although our days are definitely numbered.

The Procedure and other new arrivals

We have been lucky enough to purchase two (2!) copies of Harry Mulisch’s THE PROCEDURE, Viking, 2001. They are priced at 6 Euros each and we don’t expect to be able to replace them when they are gone. Other new arrivals are, as usual, available here.

Ever since we opened, we’ve been selling copies of two of Edward Gorey’s books, Donald And The … and Donald Has A Difficulty. I wish we had others but, of course, we don’t. This isn’t really news but someone sent us an email enquiry using the form on our web page. That works great, so long as you remember to fill in your email address on the line “Who should we respond to?” Otherwise, we don’t have any idea who sent the email. We’re happy to respond to your queries and don’t want you to think that we’re ignoring you.

On a related note, the shop is full of unopened cartons of books. Birdbrain has been under the weather of late and has been in the store for only a few hours a day. This means that we have not been able to keep up with cataloging the new arrivals as well as we’d like. Not to worry, the windows have been changing frequently and things will soon be back to normal.

Inauguration schedule

New Year’s Day

We will be closed on Thursday the First of January, 2009. If practical, we will probably close somewhat early on Wednesday, New Year’s Eve. On Friday the Second of January, we will be open for business as usual. We wish a Happy New Year to all of you.
